Bob Harrington with the Sherwood/Radar Farm Civil War Memorial Park discusses an education event coming up to commemorate the anniversary of the skirmish that happened there in 1863. Details are below.

Tuesday, May 18 at 10:00 am, an educational program for local middle and high school students will be held at the Sherwood/Rader Farm Civil War Memorial Park. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

At the site in 1863, Union forces from Baxter Springs were attacked by Confederate guerrillas, who killed 18 soldiers, 15 of which were from the newly formed 1st Kansas Colored Infantry. The following day, Union forces retaliated by burning the nearby community of Sherwood, then the third largest town in Jasper County and 11 homesteads in the immediate area.

The program will include:

A presentation by Larry Wood, whose article on these events appeared in a recent issue of the Missouri Historical Review.
Reenactors who will display and discuss the equipment used by soldiers on both sides.
A display of artifacts, including bullets, found in an archaeological study of the site.
Dedication of a new kiosk, the second in the park, that provides information about these events and the larger story of the impact of the Civil War on this region.

The Sherwood/Radar Farm Civil War Memorial Park is located in Jasper County at the intersection of Fountain and Peace Church Roads.

And the Carl Junction Area Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for a clean up and their Second Tuesday programs. Visit their website for more information.
