Farmers and Families who need assistance recieved good news from President Trump, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, The President of the American Farm Bureau Federation Zippy Duvall and others when details were announced at the President’s press conference on Tuesday, May 19th.The news was on how to deal with food insecurity and other issues around access to food for so many millions of Americans who are facing the challenges of feeding their families. The Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP), which will provide up to $16 billion in direct payments to deliver relief to America’s farmers and ranchers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
In addition to this direct support to farmers and ranchers, USDA’s Farmers to Families Food Box program is partnering with regional and local distributors, whose workforces have been significantly impacted by the closure of many restaurants, hotels, and other foodservice entities, to purchase $3 billion in fresh produce, dairy, and meat and deliver boxes to Americans in need.
The President took a few questions and was asked meat packing plants. Some farmers have had to euthanize pigs, cows chickens and other livestock because several meat packing plants slowed down processing because of the spread of coronovirus among their workers . Some farmers have had to dump thousands of gallons of milk in their pastures, others have plowed under crops that they can’t get to market. The President talked about how this was a real opportunity to solve a major problem.
The President of the American Farm Bureau Federation was invited to say a few words. He said the supply chain of food in America is as important as the military and should be a matter of national security.
President Trump also addressed the issue of the harmful effects on America’s farmers due to the importing of beef and pork from other countries into the United States and why it should end.
